What's a Simulation?
What are Software Simulation Tools?

Software simulation tools are used to create a simulation of a "live" enterprise system or business application for the purposes of training end-users on a particular task. Similar to a flight simulator, but used to train software end-users. Companies typically use software simulations to train their end-users on enterprise systems such as SAP, PeopleSoft and Siebel.

The two main benefits of software simulations are:

1.   Faster learning and higher retention rates due to the interactivity and relevance of the training itself
2.   Data integrity within your live system since the training - and mistakes which users make during the training - only happen in a simulation and not in the live system

The typical process of creating a simulation involves:

  • going through the business application and performing the exact task that end-users are to be trained on;
  • while using the software simulation tool to capture all the screens and record the interactions with those screens in the live business application.

    Once the task has been completed, the software simulation tool generates a file containing all the screens and interactions you've had with those screens. Depending on the capability of the software simulation tool, the file may or may not require extensive editing, e.g. adjusting "hot spots" and adding instructions and other content to the screens which would form part of the training.

    The typical end result is a software simulation made up of a collection of screens and instructions which together form an interactive lesson.
